About this game

Grim Tides tries to blend tabletop RPG vibes, familiar dungeon crawling and roguelike mechanics, and a classic turn-based combat system into an accessible and entertaining package. Because of its attention to written storytelling, detailed worldbuilding and abundance of lore, Grim Tides can be similar to a solo Dungeons and Dragons campaign, or even a choose your own adventure book.

Grim Tides is a single player game and can be played offline. It has no lootboxes, energy bars, overpriced cosmetics, content locked behind endless microtransactions, or other modern monetization schemes. Just some unobtrusive ads, permanently removable with a one-time purchase, and completely optional goodies for those who wish to support the game and its development even further.

I gave it a decent try. I even supported them by buying a starter pack because I just like small project games. The game has a story and easy to understand mechanics. But it's just a grind. There are randomly generated dungeons you go through literally hundreds of them, fighting slight variations of the same monsters hundreds of times till your character hits a level to unlock more of the story. Lots of games have grindy parts, but this one appears to be a grind all the way through.

The gameplay loop gets old and tedious after you become strong enough to mop the floor with 95% of encounters, which doesn't take very long. This is not a difficulty thing either, since I played on the highest settings. Still a nice game. I liked the story and aesthetics. I also appreciate the wide range of gameplay settings including the advanced difficulty sliders. However, I'm not replaying this ever xD. One full playtrough is more than enough.

It's an alright game. Clearly made with heart. The combat gets boring quick & the game is quite casual, despite being promoted as old-school. The storytelling is not great, though can be immersive at times. The whole experience grows a bit stale, since the grind is a bit on the heavy side for such a monotonous experience. There are like a dozen popups promoting to support, they're quite distracting. Nevertheless, there are plenty of paths to take, things to "upgrade," and the AI art is gorgeous.
