Amazing arcade game, awful mobile controls. I love playing the original R-Type game, but the controls of this mobile port are awful. The buttons are too small even if you max out its 'zoom' setting. Not sure if this is an issue specific to the Samsung Galaxy S7 or all Android phones in general, since I'm not playing this game on a tablet.

This game's been making me look foolish for 34 years now. It's difficult, but it always was. I'm always dubious about mobile versions of retro games that were never designed for touch screens as the mechanics never work satisfactorily, however R-Type doesn't just work on a phone, it feels more intuitive. I now struggle to play a different version using a controller as it feels too slow. Whether you want a nostalgia hit or one of gaming's legendary shoot-em up challenges, I recommend this. No ads

I love r type and this version is not bad. I do wish there was some in-between with the controls. It gives you either an oversized d pad which is horrible as you'd expect, or a much better touch control scheme where the ship follows your finger motion. The second option seems more viable, but it actually changes the gameplay since it gives your ship infinite speed. Why they did this I don't know, it makes it weird and hacky to play since I'm used to the movement speed of the ship.
