LUI Then & Now critically examines the past of the Ludwig Uhland Institute (LUI) of Historical and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Tübingen during National Socialism and shows how the Institute has transformed since then. The app is intended for students and visitors to the institute who wish to learn about its history and current activities. Going beyond the scope of a traditional guide, the app combines interactive tasks with elements inspired by games and social media. In various chapters, the app takes users to different locations within the institute. It explores the transformation of the institute from Nazi-influenced folklore studies to modern, critical cultural anthropology. Topics covered include the romanticisation of living rooms and "Heimat," archival collections, and the role of symbols, as well as their relationship to the LUI and its furnishings, some of which have been preserved since the 1930s. The app is free, available in German and was developed by students and staff at the University of Tübingen as part of the seminar “LUI Then & Now” in collaboration with the Vienna-based software company Fluxguide.
