About this game

New expansion campaigns have been released! The Russian Civil War and Invasion campaigns are purchasable within the game.

Pixel Soldiers: The Great War is a simple to play, but difficult to master turn based strategy game set during the First World War. You will choose to command the armies of either the Entente (France, Britain and Russia) or the Central Powers (Germany, Austria and the Ottoman Empire).

You will fight from 1914 to 1918 on the Western Front and Eastern Front. You will land on the beaches at Gallipoli, desperately hold or seize the important city of Verdun and try to achieve a breakthrough on the Somme.

This game is the fourth entry in the Pixel Soldiers series. Previous games: Pixel Soldiers: Waterloo, Pixel Soldiers: Bull Run and Pixel Soldiers: Gettysburg.

A game that you pay for once and play. I greatly appreciate that. I don't appreciate the in-game victory points mechanism. I don't remember seeing that before, but it sucks. It forces you to go straight for arbitrary, meaningless objectives to gain "points" rather than actual, strategic objectives like high ground, river fords, or features that offer cover (buildings, forests, etc.). There's no way to turn it off unless you fight to the death, which also isn't realistic. 5 stars otherwise.

There are few easily accessible WW1 games out there, yet this one hits the mark very well, capturing the feel of different campaigns and settings with the backdrop of dogged slaughter that defined the Great War in historical reality. I only wish for a few little touches as updates: different music for the victories of the Entente versus the Central Powers, for instance, recognition of the German superiority on artillery for much of the war, and inclusion of U-boats to counter naval warships.

It's the best mobile turn-based strategy I've played in quite a while! Aesthetically, many of the maps are far too green. If possible, it would be nice if the land tiles were less verdant, or degraded with conflict or bombardment. It would also be good if trees could be reduced by artillery, as was a common sight on WWI battlefields. EDIT: I appreciate the reply! Just noticed that it's only 28 MB. Impressive!
