The LWL-Museum Zeche Nachtigall has an eventful history. Ruhr mining began here in the Muttental valley with small collieries. The small operation quickly developed into one of the most profitable underground mines in the region. After underground mining ceased, the Dünkelberg brickworks opened its doors on the former colliery site. The focus of raw material extraction was now on sandstone and slate clay, but the remaining coal left over from the colliery was also extracted and used for the company's own needs. After the closure of the brickworks, the buildings fell into disrepair and the site eventually became a scrap yard. In the 1980s, the potential of the site was recognised. As a result, the Westphalian Industrial Museum Nachtigall Colliery, which today bears the name LWL-Museum Nachtigall Colliery, was opened in 2003 after extensive renovation work.
