Their guide looked down at Elias, effectively reminding him about their size difference. The guy looked more like a mountain or a bear of a man.

“These bears are different. They seem to prefer young men as their prey. You would suit them more than anyone else in your group.”

Elias laughed. “What nonsense. You’re just trying to scare me into behaving.”

“Is it working?” Torin asked smugly as if he enjoyed scaring Elias into doing what he wanted.

“No,” Elias said with a teasing smile that belied his words.

The large man made a growl of some sort.

“You will regret it dearly if any of the bears takes a liking to you. They consume humans like they are snacks.”

“So all you will find is my bones? I can think of a lot worse ways to leave this life.”

“Look, kid.” The guide sounded as if he was about to lose his temper. “My job is to keep you alive, and I can’t protect all of you if you wander off in different directions. Just stay with the group, or I will have to take action.”

“Action? What would that mean?” Elias felt a slight shiver of anticipation of what this large man could do to him.

“Behave yourself. Then you won’t have to find out. But I can assure you that you won’t like it.”

“I paid for this trip. Besides, I’m 22 so don’t call me kid.”

“And I’m paid to keep all of you alive and well so you can return to your loved ones. Don’t make my job any more difficult than it already is.”

“Fair enough. I’m not totally unreasonable. I was just wondering if you were going to spank me or tie me up.”

The guide laughed.

“You’re a handful, young spitfire. You will make your man very happy one day.”

“I’m not into men,” Elias said.

“Are you sure about that?” The guide looked as if he knew something that Elias hadn’t discovered yet.

“Of course I’m sure.”

Torin gave him a thoughtful look before he directed all of them to a viewpoint.
