भारतीय सेना के गौरव फील्ड मार्शल करिअप्पा का पूरा नाम कोडंडेरा मडप्पा करिअप्पा था। उनका जन्म 28 जनवरी; 1899 को पूर्ववर्ती कूर्ग में शनिवर्सांथि नामक स्थान पर हुआ था। इस स्थान को अब ‘कुडसुग’ नाम से जाना जाता है। 15 मई; 1993 को 94 वर्ष की अवस्था में इस महान् योद्धा का निधन हो गया। वह सदा कहा करते थे; ‘‘मैं अपनी अंतिम साँस तक भारतीय रहूँगा। मेरे दो ही स्थान हैं—हिंदुस्तान और फौजिस्तान।’’
