Il recente, disastroso terremoto del 24 agosto 2016, oltre a coinvolgere emotivamente per il numero delle vittime e per la conseguente discussione inerente la messa in sicurezza delle abitazioni, ha posto all'attenzione del grande pubblico un territorio del centro Italia che, benché di notevole interesse storico-artistico, non poteva dirsi ancora sufficientemente conosciuto. Soltanto pochi giorni dopo il sisma, Vittorio Sgarbi ha segnalato la straordinaria ricchezza di opere, non solo pittoriche, che era conservata soprattutto nel museo e nelle chiese di Amatrice, come in Accumoli, Arquata del Tronto e in altri centri compresi tra il Lazio e le Marche, non esitando a definire la città di Amatrice come un tesoro gotico distrutto.
