În 1628 Louis XIII guvernează Franţa împreuna cu cardinalul Richelieu. Ultimul încearca să facă faţă conspiraţiilor necontenite pe care le crează mama (Marie de Médicis), soţia (Anne d’Autriche) şi fratele regelui (Gaston d’Orléans). Richelieu află că un anume conte de Moret (supranumit Sfinxul Roşu), fiul natural al lui Henri IV si al Jacqueline de Bueil, a adus nişte scrisori celor două regine şi s-a îndrăgostit de d’Isabelle de Lautrec, domnişoara de onoare a Anne d’Autriche care era promisă lui M. de Pontis.
