About this ebook

This book provides a new roadmap for the design and discovery of mechanical metamaterials. Starting with a review of mechanical metamaterials developments in all domains, the book explains their advantages and limitations with respect to multifunctionality and responsiveness, adaptability, actuation, and autonomy. It then discusses data-driven methods for inverse design and optimization of mechanical metamaterials. The book highlights unprecedented and counterintuitive mechanical characteristics that can be achieved by mechanical metamaterials, and how these can be realized. It also explores the advanced functionalities expected to be achieved by mechanical metamaterials beyond the mechanical domain, how they can enable creating multifunctional intelligent matter, how to surpass the challenges of mechanical metamaterials at the component and integration levels, and when mechanical metamaterial devices and systems with a level of cognitive capabilities and intelligence are expected to be applied beyond the mechanical domain. The book is suitable for researchers and practitioners in materials science, computational science, structural and material engineering, and engineering design.• Introduces all major extraordinary mechanical characteristics of mechanical metamaterials• Explores in an interdisciplinary manner the unique performance of mechanical metamaterials (mechano-electrical, mechano-magnetic, mechano-thermal, etc)• Opens up new avenues of research for data-driven methods and their application in mechanical metamaterials
