Eric Gill's opinionated manifesto on typography argues that 'a good piece of lettering is as beautiful a thing to see as any sculpture or painted picture'. Born in Brighton in 1882, Eric Gill was one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century. A sculptor, engraver, printmaker and typeface designer, his work can be found in Westminister Cathedral and on other iconic buildings around the country, his typefaces were adopted for branding by high profile organizations such as the BBC. He died in 1940.
