A differenza delle scienze teoretiche che ricercano il sapere per se stesso e delle scienze poietiche che mirano alla produzione di oggetti utili o belli, la scienza che riguarda la prassi, ossia le azioni interumane, ricerca il sapere come guida per l’agire. Questa scienza è detta da Aristotele politica ed ha per oggetto ciò che costituisce il bene per l’uomo, bene che “è identico per il singolo e per la città”. Etica individuale e politica in senso stretto sono quindi due momenti complementari di un’unica scienza che è la scienza della prassi. Etica Nicomachea e Politica vanno quindi lette in questa prospettiva unitaria. Della Nicomachea sono presentati integralmente i libri in cui Aristotele discute i concetti fondamentali di questa scienza pratica: il bene e la felicità (I e X), la giustizia (V), l’amicizia (VIII e IX). Della Politica sono presentati sei libri su otto. Dei libri non inclusi viene fornito un compendio.
