Die Erzählung »Papa Hamlet«, 1889 von dem Autorenduo Arno Holz und Johannes Schlaf unter Pseudonym veröffentlicht, gilt als Paradebeispiel naturalistischer Dichtung. In protokollartigen Dialogen und akustisch-visuell aufgeladenen Erzählpassagen schildert der Text das armselige Leben eines gescheiterten, dem Alkohol verfallenen Schauspielers. Für die minutiöse Erzähltechnik wurde der Begriff des Sekundenstils geprägt. Ergänzt wird die Ausgabe durch die Studentengeschichte »Ein Tod«, ein Vorwort der Autoren sowie Johannes Schlafs Kurznovelle »Ein Dachstubenidyll«, die die Grundlage für »Papa Hamlet« war.
