Die 15-jährige Philine und ihre Tante Lydia verlassen Jerusalem, unmittelbar nachdem der Versammlungsort der Jesusleute im Hause des Lukas von den römischen Beamten entdeckt worden ist. Trotz beschwerlicher Reise erreichen beide unversehrt Damaskus, wo sie zunächst bei Hananias Unterkunft finden. Doch bald erkrankt Lydia schwer, und Philine muss eine neue Bleibe finden. Durch seltsame Umstände tritt plötzlich Priscilla, eine vornehme und gelehrte Römerin, in Philines Leben und nimmt sich ihrer an. Über ihre Motive erfährt Philine zunächst nichts. Erst als sie mehr über die Menora in Erfahrung bringt, die Priscilla in ihrem Schreibzimmer aufbewahrt, erkennt Philine ihre Rolle in einer verwickelten Geschichte, die sie auf die Spur ihrer Herkunft bringt.
