GIFT is an open-source intelligent tutoring system (ITS) architecture that is freely available online at GIFTtutoring.org. There are both Cloud and Downloadable version of GIFT. GIFT has been developed with multiple goals in mind including supporting ITS research, and simplified creation of ITSs and Adaptive Instructional Systems (AISs).
Our fantastic team, and our program committee did a great job supporting the development of GIFTSym11, reviewing papers, and assisting with the facilitation of the event this year. We want to recognize them for their efforts:
• Benjamin Goldberg
• Gregory Goodwin
• Michele Myers
• Alexandra Lutz
• Randall Spain
• Lisa N. Townsend
We were very pleased to have GIFTSym11 return to being an in-person event this year! Additionally, this was our first year offering a hybrid option for attendees. We are very happy that both modalities were well attended!
Dr. Anne M. Sinatra is a Research Psychologist in the Learning in Intelligent Tutoring Environments (LITE) Lab within the U.S. Army DEVCOM Soldier Center Simulation and Training Technology Center. The focus of her research is in cognitive psychology, human factors psychology, and adaptive team tutoring. She has specific interest in how information relating to the self and about those that one is familiar with can aid in memory, recall, and tutoring. Her dissertation research evaluated the impact of using degraded speech and a familiar story on attention/recall in a dichotic listening task. Her post-doctoral work examined the self-reference effect and personalization in the context of computer-based tutoring. Her work has been published in journals including the Computers in Human Behavior, Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education, and Interaction Studies. Her work has also been published in conference proceedings including the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society conference, and the Human Computer Interaction International conference. She additionally has served as an editor on five books (she was lead editor on three of them), and chaired three team tutoring workshops during the Artificial Intelligence in Education conferences in 2018, 2019, and 2021). Dr. Sinatra received her Ph.D. and M.A. in Applied Experimental and Human Factors Psychology, as well as her B.S. in Psychology from the University of Central Florida.
Dr. Benjamin Goldberg is a Senior Research Scientist at the U.S. Army Combat Capability Development Command – Soldier Center where he serves as technical lead for a research program focused on the development and evaluation of adaptive Training Management Tools for future Army training systems. Dr. Goldberg’s research focuses on adaptive experiential learning with an emphasis on simulation-based environments and leveraging Artificial Intelligence to create personalized experiences. This involves exploring research questions linked to intelligent tutoring, competency development, persistent learner modeling, immersive interaction, mixed reality, and user experience. His research aims to impact how technology can be applied to support the development and sustainment of expertise in challenging domains that require proficiency across cognitive, psychomotor, and affective knowledge and skill sets. Dr. Goldberg holds a Ph.D. in Modeling & Simulation from the University of Central Florida and has researched adaptive instructional systems and intelligent tutoring for the last 15 years. He is well published across several high-impact journals and proceedings, including IEEE Transactions of Learning Technologies, the Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED), and Computers in Human Behavior.
