Wegen ihrer Großväter war Birgit-Cathrin Duval bereits als Kind davon fasziniert, die Welt mit nur einem Auge zu betrachten. Beide waren nämlich einäugig. Als sie entdeckte, dass auch Fotografen "Einäugige" sind, wenn sie durch den Sucher blicken, war der Wunsch nach einer Kamera geweckt. Ihre erste Kamera stammte aus dem Kult Comic "YPS mit Gimmick". Sie machte tatsächlich Fotos. Das Handwerk lernte sie am College of Communications an der University of the Nations in Hawaii, wo sie mehr Zeit in der Dunkelkammer als am Strand verbrachte.
