Februar 1945 in Schweden geboren. Er studierte Literaturwissenschaft, Skandinavistik und Anglistik und arbeitete viele Jahre als Lehrer. Seit seinem Debut als Schriftsteller hat er insgesamt 30 Bücher herausgegeben, die meisten davon Kinderbücher. Alle Bücher spielen in seinem Heimatland Schweden. Holmberg wurde mit mehreren Literaturpreisen ausgezeichnet, darunter der Astrid-Lindgren-Preis im Jahr 1998 und der Kulla-Gulla-Preis im Jahr 2003.
