Il nome di Bram Stoker (1847-1912) è indissolubilmente legato a uno dei romanzi più celebri di tutti i tempi, "Dracula", che apparso nel 1897 ha ispirato innumerevoli adattamenti teatrali e cinematografici. Come spesso accade in questi casi, la straordinaria fama di un'opera arriva paradossalmente a offuscare le altre; tuttavia Stoker, che fu giornalista e critico teatrale per "The Evening Mail", scrisse un gran numero di romanzi e racconti, fra i quali i tre qui riuniti: "La coppa di cristallo" (1872), "Il castello del re" (1876) e "II costruttore d'ombre" (1881). Colpisce in particolare, in questi racconti, che si presentano come altrettanti apologhi su Amore e Morte – e non solo l'amore fra uomo e donna, ma anche, come nel terzo racconto, quello fra madre e figlio –, la capacità visionaria dell'autore, nonché la sua abilità nel proiettare all'interno di rappresentazioni mitiche, favolose, oniriche (quasi un aldilà della vita ricavato allegoricamente dalla vita stessa) intense e affascinanti storie di separazione e di ricongiungimento.
