About this ebook

This book offers a holistic perspective, integrating linguistics, speech/musical acoustics, and their cognitive interfaces. We are privileged to commemorate Sir C.V. Raman's seminal 1920 paper on Musical Acoustics by presenting cutting-edge research in speech and musical acoustics within these Proceedings of Frontiers of Research in Speech and Music 2024.
Over the past century, scientific advancements have been monumental, spanning from macro to femto scales. In India, speech and musical acoustics have been fostered since the 1920s, with theoretical and experimental tools evolving significantly. Methodologies for speech and music analysis have progressed from early spectral domain linear features to nonlinear stochastic analysis and, most recently, to neural network-based machine learning architectures for audio feature extraction. The development of bio-sensors has provided profound insights into autonomic and central nervous system function under various speech signals and musical genres. Modern analytical techniques also enable the assessment of speech and language disorders, with a special focus on interventional music therapy.
The FRSM-2024 proceedings cover diverse topics, including:
● Novel speech and music signal processing techniques.
● Speech-language pathology and its applications.
● Analysis of linguistic variations across Southeast Asian language families.
● Speech characteristics in individuals with language disorders.
● The concept of improvisation in Hindustani classical music.
● Emotional appraisal from music and speech signals.
● Application of music technology in profile analysis.
● Neuro-cognition in speech, music, and interdisciplinary domains.
The editors anticipate that this publication will be a valuable resource for the acoustical community, and its interdisciplinary nature will engage young scientists, students, music practitioners, speech scientists, linguists, neuroscientists, and music therapists, inspiring further contributions to this rich field.
