In manchen Schulformen meldet sich mehr als ein Viertel der Schüler vom Religionsunterricht ab. Das wirft die Frage nach den Abmeldegründen auf. Die vorliegende Publikation geht dem mittels einer empirischen Schüler- und Lehrerbefragung nach. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Abmelder die Inhalte des Religionsunterrichts für ihre Lebensdeutung nicht plausibel finden. Überraschend daran ist, dass die parallel befragten Lehrer eher äußere Gründe wie das Verhältnis zu den Lehrenden oder höhere Leistungsanforderungen vermuten: eine klare Perspektivendifferenz. Darüber hinaus konnten die Abmelder aufgrund ihrer Werthaltung typologisiert werden. Es wurde deutlich, dass die inhaltliche Kritik am Religionsunterricht mit einer Werthaltung korreliert, die Autonomie und Offenheit für Wandel betont. Das legt den Schluss nahe, dass mit einer progressiven Theologie, die inhaltlich für den Religionsunterricht unübliche Wege geht, weniger Abmeldungen zu erwarten wären. In einem abschließenden Kapitel werden daher exemplarisch am Thema Sünde Wege aufgezeigt, wie potenzielle Abmelder im Religionsunterricht adäquat erreicht werden können. [Exemption From Religious Education] In some federal states more than a quarter of the students exempt themselves from religious education. This raises the question for the reasons of exemption. The present publication explores this question by means of an empirical survey of teachers and students. The results show that the students who exempt themselves do so because they don't find the content of teaching plausible for their view of life. It is surprising that the teachers tend to suppose external factors as for instance the relationship with the teachers and difficulties with higher learning standards.

Carsten Gennerich, Dr. theol., Jahrgang 1969, studierte Theologie und Psychologie in Göttingen. Als Professor für Religions- und Gemeindepädagogik unterrichtet und forscht er an der Ev.
