About this ebook

A seductive thief

Lady’s maid Molly Wilkins is done with thieving—and cheating and stabbing and all the rest of it. She’s determined to keep her hands to herself, so she really shouldn’t be tempted to seduce her employer’s prim and proper companion, Alice. But how can she resist when Alice can’t seem to keep her eyes off Molly?

Finds her own heart

For the first time in her life, Alice Stapleton has absolutely nothing to do. The only thing that seems to occupy her thoughts is a lady’s maid with a sharp tongue and a beautiful mouth. Her determination to know Molly’s secrets has her behaving in ways she never imagined as she begins to fall for the impertinent woman.

Has been stolen

When an unwelcome specter from Alice’s past shows up unexpectedly at a house party, Molly volunteers to help the only way she knows how: with a little bit of mischief.

Alice is the daughter of a vicar who wasn’t a model of propriety, and has taken a position as a companion to a woman who not only treats her well, but is more than happy to have her about. Another in service is Molly, the lady’s maid with a history of thieving, and a big secret. Alice has never quite been “like the others”, but she’s convinced herself that her lot in life is to be of service, and away from her father’s influence and tempers. Here Sebastian uses the character of Molly – born on the rough side of London, struggling to do the best for the moment, and intrigued by the quiet, retiring and not particularly open Alice. Oh this was fun – from Molly’s flirtation to Alice’s curiosity and discovery of Molly’s secrets, all leading to a discovery of her own power and beauty as Molly seeks to bring her good points forward: adjusting her clothing, hair and attitude with a mixture of tough talk and gentle caresses. A full on romance between the two occurs, but the test of both trustworthiness and dedication comes with a brooch, a great sum of money and some separation. As in all of her stories, Sebastian does more than create electric chemistry and longing: these two are well-matched and find strength in one another: particularly with Alice’s rather unusual (for a woman of her class) acceptance of Molly, her child and her determination to start a business and manage her own life. Throughout the story we see Alice claiming back some of what she lost, and make peace with the fact that her father was unjust and unfair in his disavowing of her – and her ability to both correct that slight and set the two of them on a path of new opportunity. I love these books for their ‘rightness’ in seeing love as simply that – no matter who the couple is. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
