Aleksey Peshkov overcame indigence, violence, and suicidal despair to become Maksim Gorky, one of the most widely read and influential writers of the twentieth century. Childhood, the first book in Gorky's acclaimed autobiographical trilogy, depicts his early years, when after his father's death he was taken to live in the home of his maternal grandfather, a violent and vindictive man who both provided the child with a rudimentary education and subjected him to savage beatings.

Childhood is freshly and beautifully translated by Graham Hettlinger, lauded for his translations of Ivan Bunin.

Maksim Gorky (1868-1936) became one of the most trenchant observers of both the promises and moral dangers of revolution in Russia. He was forced to flee the country twice-once in 1906, as a prominent opponent of the tsarist regime, and again in 1921, as a vocal critic of the Bolshevik government. He began a series of extended visits to the Soviet Union in 1928, returning permanently in 1933. Graham Hettlinger's most recent book of translations was The Collected Stories of Ivan Bunin. He works in the Office of International Programs at Georgetown University.
