Mosca, 1960. Anna sa bene ciò che ci si aspetta da lei e cosa significa studiare nel prestigioso Istituto Superiore Stella Rossa: ottimi voti, una condotta modello e un futuro già scritto nei più alti ranghi della società sovietica. E tutto procede come programmato, almeno finché alla Stella Rossa non arriva un nuovo studente diverso da chiunque altro. Marko gira per i corridoi con il colletto della giacca alzato e un sorriso sfrontato, in classe fa domande scomode e il suo passato sembra avvolto nel mistero. Ma, soprattutto, Marko non ha paura di sfidare quelle regole che sembrano assurde in anni in cui i giovani di tutto il mondo inneggiano alla libertà sulle note sfrenate del rock and roll, severamente vietato in Unione Sovietica, come tutto ciò che viene dall'Ovest. Ed è proprio con lui, tra feste segrete e riviste eversive, che Anna scopre quelle canzoni proibite. Violare le regole significa però giocare con il fuoco, e alla resa dei conti Anna e Marko rischiano di perdere ogni cosa: il loro rapporto, il loro futuro, la libertà.
