Prea lucid ca să rămână multă vreme pe tărâmul iluziilor de vindecare, deși nu refuză nici un tratament – fie el și experimental –, prea onest și egal cu sine pentru o convertire religioasă grăbită și – în viziunea sa – oportunistă, de ultim moment, scriitorul pare să rămână cu o ultimă soluție: acceptarea mortalității. Dar n-o va face, pentru că nu aceasta este miza sa. Hitchens nu accepta nimic, înainte de a cunoaște. Înțelegerea mortalității pe care boala, grăbindu-i ritmul, o apropie ochiului analitic, înseamnă, în viziunea intelectualului Hitchens, a trăi până la capăt.
