Before the start of the Spanish-American War, newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst sent star reporter Richard Harding Davis and acclaimed illustrator Frederic Remington to Cuba to cover the simmering rebellion. Journalist, playwright, editor, and novelist Richard Harding Davis (1864–1916) was the first to write about the Rough Riders' charge up San Juan Hill. He also reported on the Boer War, the Mexican Revolution, and the German invasion of Belgium during World War I.
