DAVID: Shepherd, Psalmist, King

By Frederick Brotherton Meyer | Annotated Edition

From the quiet hills of Bethlehem to the golden throne in Jerusalem, David’s life unfolds as one of Scripture’s most compelling narratives—marked by faith, failure, worship, war, and ultimate redemption. In this beautifully updated and faithful edition of David: Shepherd, Psalmist, King, Frederick Brotherton Meyer presents the life of David not only as Israel’s greatest king, but also as a man after God’s own heart.

Through rich devotional insights, practical lessons, and poetic storytelling, Meyer traces David’s spiritual journey—from the sheepfold to the battlefield, from the palace to the wilderness, from sin to sorrow to song. Readers will walk with David through his triumphs and tragedies, discover the shaping of the Psalms in his soul, and see how God’s grace weaves through every high and low point of his story.

This edition preserves Meyer’s timeless message while providing careful updates for clarity, Scripture references in the ESV, and modernized language to bring fresh life to an enduring classic.

Whether you are new to David’s story or returning to it with deeper longing, this book will lead you to behold the King of Israel—and to find in his life a reflection of your own walk with the Shepherd of your soul.
