Charging selflessly into danger, facing the mortality of an artificially extended life, plumbing the deepest depths of space, fighting to expose truths others want to keep hidden... This collection of all-new stories from Brain Lag authors features never-before-seen glimpses into favourite worlds as well as new characters and places to love. From starkly beautiful to brashly funny and everything in between, these stories showcase the range of voices Brain Lag has been proud to publish over the years.
Why do we tell such tales of hardship and bravery, honesty and reflection?
Because in the darkness between the stars, there are no heroes. There are only regular people who step up.

After working for a number of evil empires, Catherine decided to forgo things like a salary and regular human interaction to start a business. She lives near Toronto, Ontario with her husband, daughter, and two crazy tabbies.
Dale E. McClenning was born in Illinois and lived most of his life in Indiana. He went to Ohio State for Mechanical Engineering and was an engineer for 33 years mostly doing industrial turbine engines (generator sets). He has a wife of 33 years, two boys (32 and 28), one daughter-in-law and one soon to be, and one granddaughter. He has been reading science fiction since grade school and writing since junior high. He has read a lot of history and theology as well as science fiction.
Gary Girod has published short stories of all genres for the past decade. He also founded the French History Podcast, which covers the history of France from three million years ago to present. He is currently finishing his doctoral dissertation at the University of Houston and divides his time between writing fiction, world-traveling and wearing a suit while monologuing about the deeds of dead people.
Stephen B. Pearl is a multiple published author whose works range across the speculative fiction field. Whether his characters are wandering the wilds of a post-oil future, braving a storm in a longship, or flying through the interplanetary void in an army surplus assault lander, his writings focus heavily on the logical consequences of the worlds he crafts.
Stephen’s inspirations encompass H.G. Wells, J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank Herbert and Homer among others. In writing the Tinker’s World series, he has, among other factors, drawn on his training as an Emergency Medical Care Assistant, a SCUBA diver, his long-standing interest in environmental technologies and his firsthand knowledge of the Guelph area.
His lifelong fascination with the space program has factored heavily into his upcoming novel Cloning Freedom: Brain Lag Publishing: www.brain-lag.com.
His fascination with metaphysics has contributed to his para-normal works.

Born on a Groundhog Day a few decades ago, and raised with repeated viewings of the original Star Wars movies, the author developed a taste for fantastical stories and worlds. He had a healthy appetite for science fiction stories which soon led to other genres and a large collection of paperbacks on the shelf.
His day job remains a more monotonous world of numbers, paper and procedures but it has allowed the author to travel through many different countries and cultures including Chile, Australia and into the Arctic Circle for extended periods of time.
When not travelling, the author makes his home in southern Ontario, Canada, where he lives happily with his wife and daughter. He spends much of his free time studying vintage aircraft and playing tabletop games.
Three-time Aurora Award nominee, Hugh Spencer has been writing science fiction and cultural commentary (popular and otherwise) for longer than he cares to admit. He has been published in On Spec, Interzone, and Descant magazines, and has also been included in various anthologies. He also writes for radio and the stage, and has collaborated with Shoestring Radio in San Francisco, Praxis Theatre, and the Scripted Toronto Festival. He also occasionally contributes his alleged wisdom to the Gernsback Continuum, the podcast for Amazing Stories Magazine. Hugh’s collaborations with Brain Lag Publishing include the novel Extreme Dentistry and the collection Why I Hunt Flying Saucers and Other Fantasticals.
Erynn Q is a nonbinary author from London, Ontario who doesn’t give a hoot about what pronoun you use because they are what he is even if you call them a she. Like the Norse goddess Freyja, their chariot is drawn by two monochrome coloured cats, except instead of a chariot it’s a bright red sectional couch, and instead of pulling it the cats merely keep them company on it.
Fueled by absurd amounts of coffee, Erynn attempts to write fantasy and sci-fi stories with themes that grabbed their attention as a child. These include interdimensional travel and magic, but also dealing with mental health issues and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals.
Most of their early influences can be broadly traced back to magical girl anime, Super Paper Mario for the Nintendo Wii, and the Sonic the Hedgehog comics. They are well aware these are the least credible influences a writer could possibly have.
Also, they were the god of a cult in high school. That happened.
David Rae lives in Scotland and grew up in a world where hordes of workers spill out of factories, a world where fog and smoke shroud all kinds of creatures, a world where ruined castles, factories and houses are haunted by ghosts, gangs and memories. He lives in a world where witches have been burned at the cross and martyrs have been hung on the Gallowgreen.
Since a child, he has tried to capture that world in words, poems, and stories. He has read every trashy novel, every children’s book and every comic that came his way. Thank God for public libraries.
He studied Botany, Architecture, Mathematics, Computers, Geography, and Ecology. He worked in a candy factory (not as an Oompa-Loompa), as a scaffolder and ditch digger. He has worked as a draftsman and as an ecologist, as a statistician and as a policy maker. He is married and has four lovely children and now lovely grandchildren. And he continues to read and to write and marvel at the world he lives in.
JD DeLuzio grew up in northern Ontario and now lives midway between Detroit and Toronto with his wife, Nancy. He has written several short stories, numerous reviews (many at Bureau42.com), several articles, and one collection of short fiction, Snow-Man’s Land. As an educator, he has workshopped a number of original theatrical productions with youth. He also frequently runs panels at SF, pop culture, and literary events. His novel, The Con, will be published by Brain Lag in 2020.
Simon A. G. Spencer lives in Toronto. Soul, Light, and Wings is his first book.
