Ausgehend von neueren geschichts- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Theorien zur demokratischen Sozialform Verein gibt Dirk Hempel eingangs einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der literarischen Vereine in Deutschland, aber auch in Europa und den USA seit der frühen Neuzeit. Seine Studie bietet außerdem erstmals eine Typologie unterschiedlicher literarischer Vereinsformen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Untersuchung zahlreicher literarischer Vereine in Dresden im 19. Jahrhundert. Gefragt wird nach ihrer Organisation und ihren Akteuren sowie nach den Inhalten der Vereinstätigkeit.
