Khandekar Award for her novel “College” and of excellent literary work for “Nakalat”. This write-up is about the novel “College”. Gist of the Novel “College”  This novel is a critical comment on prevailing education system and is representative of the state of affairs in the field of education all over the country. It is in a way an assessment of the system putting a question mark on the all round development of the student and our future generation – the backbone of the nation It is ironical that whereas the student should be in the focus and the centre he is marginalised totally and so is seen in this novel. The central figure of the novel, Sumati is a Professor and Head, Department of Zoology- a Gold Medallist of her time who believes in the ethical values and feels that they form the core of any cultured society. She discharges her duties with this conviction and remains aloof from the petty politics of the college for a long time. But introduction of the temporary lecturer Ms. Wakade in her department changes things for her. Ms. Wakade is ‘practical’ in every sense. She adopts different means for her survival and takes Sumati by surprise by her every move. She is a perfect mixture of self-centeredness adopting corrupt means to achieve personal gains and mock obedience. The different happenings at various levels astonish and disturb Sumati who on one hand tries to help needy but gets almost cheated by her colleagues. There are other characters like worldly-wise Rita, pretentious Principle, evasive Maghare, social worker Jaya who entwines the texture of the novel with finess.  In spite of all this, reader does not get depressed, but sees the ray of hope. The prominent noteworthy feature of the novel is, it does not have to depend on romance or sex for enlarging its readership.
