सरदार जब भोजन के पश्चात् विश्राम कर रहे थे तब अचानक घनश्यामदास बिड़ला आ पहुँचे। विश्राम के बाद सरदार बैठक कक्ष में आए तब घनश्यामदासजी उनकी प्रतीक्षा कर रहे थे। कल गांधीजी के साथ उनकी जो मुलाकात निश्चित हुई थी; उसके बारे में सरदार बिड़लाजी को जानकारी देना चाहते थे। पिछले कुछ दिनों में जो घटनाएँ घटित हुई थीं; उनकी वैसे तो बिड़लाजी को जानकारी थी ही। बापू के उपवास समाप्त हो गए; उसके विषय में जब बिड़लाजी ने राहत की भावना व्यक्त की तब सरदार ने कहा—
‘‘बिड़लाजी; इस उपवास से सांप्रदायिक तनाव शांत हो गया है; क्या ऐसा कोई मान सकता है।’’ इतना कहकर उन्होंने थोड़ी देर पहले ही उनके पास आए हुए निर्वासितों के समूह द्वारा वर्णित उनके अनुभव की बात बताई। ‘‘इन लोगों को हम शरणार्थियों के शिविर में पशुओं के समान बंद कर दें? विशेष रूप से जब यहाँ से पाकिस्तान चले गए मुसलमानों के मकान बंद पड़े हों और विशाल मसजिदें बिलकुल खाली हों तब ये निर्वासित कैसे शांत रह सकते हैं?’’
‘‘आप सही कह रहे हैं; सरदार!’’ बिड़लाजी ने कहा; ‘‘बापू के उपवास से किसी का हृदय परिवर्तन हुआ हो; ऐसा लगता तो नहीं।’’
‘‘क्योंकि उपवास के लिए यह बिलकुल गलत समय था।’’ सरदार ने कहा।
