डॉ. ए.पी.जे. अब्दुल कलाम (15.10.1931-27.7.2015) भारत के यशस्वी वैज्ञानिकों में से एक तथा उपग्रह प्रक्षेपण यान और रणनीतिक मिसाइलों के स्वदेशी विकास के वास्तुकार थे। एस.एल.वी.-3, ‘अग्नि’ और ‘पृथ्वी’ उनकी नेतृत्व-क्षमता के प्रमाण हैं। उनके अथक प्रयासों से भारत रक्षा तथा वायु-आकाश प्रणालियों में आत्मनिर्भर बना। अन्ना विश्वविद्यालय में प्रौद्योगिकी तथा सामाजिक रूपांतरण के प्रोफेसर के रूप में उन्होंने विद्यार्थियों से विचारों का आदान-प्रदान किया और उन्हें एक विकसित भारत का स्वप्न दिया। अनेक पुरस्कार-सम्मानों के साथ उन्हें देश के सर्वोच्च नागरिक सम्मान ‘भारत-रत्न’ से भी सम्मानित किया गया। विज्ञान-प्रसार में योगदान के लिए उन्हें प्रतिष्ठित ‘किंग चार्ल्स-ढ्ढढ्ढ’ मेडल से सम्मानित किया गया। भारत के राष्ट्रपति के रूप में अपने कार्यकाल के दौरान देश भर के आठ लाख से अधिक छात्रों से भेंट कर उन्होंने महाशक्ति भारत के स्वप्न को रचनात्मक कार्यों द्वारा साकार करने का आह्वान किया। डॉ. अपथुकथा शिवताणु पिल्लै प्रतिष्ठित वैज्ञानिक हैं, जो डी.आर.डी.ओ. (रक्षा अनुसंधान और विकास संगठन) के मुख्य नियंत्रक रहे। साथ ही ‘ब्रह्मोस’ सुपरसोनिक क्रूज मिसाइल के विकास से जुड़े भारत-रूस संयुक्त उद्यम ब्रह्मोस एयरोस्पेस के मुख्य कार्यकारी तथा प्रबंध निदेशक भी रहे। कुछ समय तक डॉ. विक्रम साराभाई और प्रो. सतीश धवन के नेतृत्व में डॉ. ए.पी.जे. अब्दुल कलाम के साथ लंबे समय तक कार्य किया। डॉ. पिल्लै को अनेक प्रतिष्ठित इंजीनियरिंग और प्रबंधन संस्थाओं ने फेलोशिप प्रदान की। आपने अनेक पुस्तकें लिखी हैं, जिनमें डॉ. कलाम के साथ लिखी गई पुस्तक ‘मेरे सपनों का भारत’ भी शामिल है। वर्ष 2002 में ‘पद्मश्री’ से सम्मानित।
