About this ebook

Stephen Judd, Anne Robinson and Felicity Errington delve into the 'who' and the 'why' central to the purpose of a charity. This book analyses the historical and social context of Australian charities and considers the relationship between charities and Australian society.

Organisation leaders, managers and those interested in the way charities can impact their communities will find Driven by Purpose a refreshing and practical approach to this important topic.

And while the book draws on Australian experience, the principles and approaches described are applicable across the globe, not only for charities or not-for-profit organisations, but for individuals interested in living life on purpose.

In his foreword to the book, former CEO of World Vision Australia, Tim Costello AO, says: 'Those who lead not-for-profit organisations, and those who guide and advise them, will benefit enormously from the practical leadership advice that Anne and Stephen present – advice based on extensive experience.'

Driven by purpose was awarded second place in the Australian Christian Book of the Year award 2013.

About the author

Dr Stephen Judd was CEO of HammondCare, an independent Christian charity that seeks to improve quality of life of people in need. Acknowledged as one of Australia’s leading providers of dementia-specific services, HammondCare provides residential and community care, palliative care, rehabilitation and psycho-geriatric care. In addition, it has a strong reputation in piloting leading edge programs, all backed by an energetic research program.

Dr Judd combines extensive management experience with a vision and passion to make a difference in the lives of those in

need. Dr Judd’s special interests include aged care design and the future role of charities in the provision of social services and health services. For the past two years, Dr Judd has served as a member on the Design Review Committee of the International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing.

In October 2005 he was awarded the Federal Minister for Ageing’s Award for Excellence in Aged Care for his outstanding leadership and management.

Anne Robinson’s legal speciality is charity law. Since 1985 she has advised on charitable trust, structuring and tax issues for a wide range of Australia’s charitable institutions, including in education, health, medical research, overseas aid and development, environment, disability, social welfare and aged care. She has also been involved in governance of not-for-profit organisations for some 25 years, including independent schools, hospital and religious institutions. She has been a Director of World Vision Australia since 2000, and has chaired the Board since 2005.

Her awareness of the dearth of reliable legal advice in this area drove her to establish Prolegis Lawyers, a specialist firm which focuses on providing legal services to not for profit and other charitable organisations. In 2009 she established the Australian Charity Law Association, of which she is also Board Chair. Like its UK and US counterparts, ACLA brings together practitioners, academics and judges with the aims of educating its members and the public in charity law, and improving the operation of charities. Anne’s expertise is reflected in her current appointment to the Not-for-Profit Sector Reform Council where she fills the role of Deputy Chair and chairs its working group on tax issues.

Felicity Errington currently works in international development, in partnership with locally based NGOs in the Asia Pacific region. She has a background in research and policy, and studied anthropology and international development at the London School of Economics, specialising in women’s rights and gender violence in the Asia Pacific region.

She has worked with NGOs engaged in a range of social purposes in Sydney, Hong Kong, India and Guyana and the UK. She is particularly interested in issues related to gender, culture and human rights, and in the role of civil society in functioning democracies.
