About this ebook

The morning had begun like any other at the ranger station. Coffee steam curled from my thermos as I reviewed the weather reports—clear skies, gentle winds, perfect conditions for the three-day solo hike I'd been planning for months. My supervisor, Janet, had raised her eyebrows when I'd requested the remote cabin assignment, deep in the Blackwater Preserve where cell towers couldn't reach and the nearest road was a twenty-mile trek through unforgiving terrain.

"You sure about this, Marcus?" she'd asked, her weathered fingers drumming against her desk. "That area's been... quiet lately. Too quiet. Even the locals won't hunt there anymore."

I'd laughed it off then, attributed her concern to the usual ranger superstitions that came with spending too much time alone in the wilderness. Every forest had its ghost stories, its unexplained disappearances, its whispered warnings passed down through generations. The Blackwater Preserve was no different—or so I'd convinced myself.

Now, as I walked along the lonely path that snaked deeper into the forest's heart, those dismissed warnings seemed to echo in the spaces between my footsteps. The beauty that surrounded me was breathtaking, almost unnaturally so. Ancient pines stretched toward a sky so blue it seemed painted, their massive trunks creating cathedral columns that filtered the morning light into dancing patterns of gold and shadow. The trees in the forest overpowered me with their sheer magnitude, some so wide that five people holding hands couldn't encompass their circumference. The sunshine that beamed down covered my whole body like a warm blanket, yet something about its touch felt different here—heavier somehow, as if the light itself carried weight.

I'd been hiking for three hours when the first signs appeared. Scratch marks on the bark, too deep and too high to be from any bear. The forest's usual symphony of birdsong had gradually faded to an unnatural silence that pressed against my eardrums.

Shortest "book" I have ever read. It did appeal to my morbid sense of humor though.
