To really understand furniture and interior design during the European 17th and 18th
centuries, it is indispensable to know the historical background of those periods. An
important point to note is that European interior designs developed under the system of
absolute monarchy in each country. England and France are among those countries,
which had established monarchies. A long term antagonism between England and France
generated such unique furniture for instance designs in each country, and not only did the
designs widely influence all of Europe, but also many areas of the world. The most
interesting point of furniture history in the 17th and 18th centuries indicates that new
designs were always generated by the tastes of the Kings/Queens of each period.
