Der Leitfaden enthält Handlungshilfen für pädagogische Fachkräfte und betriebliches Ausbildungspersonal am Übergang von Schule zu Beruf, um funktionalen Analphabetismus bei Jugendlichen zu erkennen. Materialien zur Schriftsprachförderung tragen dazu bei, die individuellen Kompetenzen zu verbessern. Das Förderkonzept wurde im Rahmen eines Modellversuchs entwickelt und in der Praxis erprobt.
