Il coro di Santa Maria del Popolo è di certo da considerarsi una delle meno note opere romane di Donato Bramante, tant'è che in epoca recente non è stato elaborato alcun accurato rilievo scientifico. Si tratta di una realizzazione fortemente condizionata dalle preesistenze e da un precedente progetto, che rispecchia però pienamente lo spirito dell'architetto milanese nella concezione dei volumi e nell'articolazione dello spazio, con una soluzione architettonica che si distingue per l'accentuata profondità spaziale. Le trasformazioni del coro in epoca barocca hanno profondamente alterato la relazione spaziale-percettiva con il presbiterio e la navata principale, ma non hanno inciso in modo sostanziale sull'articolazione spaziale-volumetrica. È proprio questa parziale ma sostanziale permanenza del progetto bramantesco che ha motivato il presente studio che, a partire da un accurato rilievo, ha analizzato la forma e la geometria dei principali elementi componenti, per poi formulare un'ipotesi di ricostruzione virtuale della conformazione bramantesca, elaborando un modello 3D in grado di rendere percettivamente fruibile l'originaria relazione spaziale tra il coro e la chiesa. | Survey and design. The spatial concept invented by Bramante for the choir of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome – The choir in the church of Santa Maria del Popolo is undoubtedly one of Donato Bramante's lesser known works, so much so that no accurate scientific survey has been performed in recent years. The design of the choir was significantly influenced by pre-existing elements and an earlier project; however its volumes and spatial layout truly reflect the spirit of the Milanese architect whose architectural solution is characterised by enhanced spatial depth. While the changes made to the altar during the Baroque era have considerably altered the choir's spatial-perceptive relationship with the presbytery and the main nave, they have not seriously affected its spatial-volumetric layout. This study was inspired by the fact that Bramante's design is still visible, albeit partially. Based on an accurate survey we analysed the form and geometry of the main elements and then formulated a possible virtual reconstruction of Bramante's design by elaborating a 3D model capable of perceptively rendering the original spatial relationship between the choir and the church. | Facing English text
