Sie stand frühzeitig unter sittenpolizeilicher Kontrolle, und übte ihr Gewerbe zuerst in wohlfeilen Freudenhäusern, der äußeren Bezirke, dann im Dienste einer Kupplerin, die während des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs- und Ausstellungsjahres 1873 die vornehmere Lebewelt mit Mädchenware versorgte.

John Galsworthy (* 14. August 1867 in Kingston Hill, Surrey, England; † 31. Januar 1933 in London) war ein englischer Schriftsteller und Dramatiker. Seine Romanreihe The Forsyte Saga gilt als ein Klassiker der modernen englischen Literatur. 1932 erhielt Galsworthy den Literaturnobelpreis.
