Apparso nel 1927 e ambientato nei primi anni dell'Italia fascista, questo lungo racconto di Franz Werfel è tra i suoi più interessanti, in particolare per la capacità dello scrittore di introdurci in una sorta di storia senza fine, o meglio di storia 'aperta' che ha gli stessi contorni nebulosi della vita reale. Racconto dell'impenetrabilità, "Il segreto di un uomo" è anche un racconto sull'arte, sulla commercializzazione dell'arte e sulla sua falsificazione; ed è forse questo l'aspetto che ancora oggi più ci colpisce: un viaggio profondo all'interno di un mondo in cui pare diventato impossibile riconoscere ciò che è autentico da ciò che non lo è, che si tratti di un'opera d'arte o si tratti invece della vita stessa delle persone.
