Einem Patienten gelingt die Flucht aus einer geschlossenen Schweizer Nervenheilanstalt. Gleichzeitig wird der Direktor der Anstalt vermisst. Wachtmeister Studer übernimmt den Fall. Schon bald darauf wird die Leiche des Direktors im Keller der Anstalt gefunden. Ihm wurden Dokumente und Bargeld entwendet. Der Schweizer Autor Friedrich Glauser (1896-1938) hat im Kriminalroman »Matto regiert« zahlreiche autobiographische Elemente eingewoben. Glauser war nach schwerer Jugend und Rauschgiftabhängigkeit selbst Patient in zahlreichen Nervenheilsanstalten. Er kannte Atmosphäre, Stimmung. und Sprache des Milieus. Mit den Wachtmeister Studer-Romanen, zu denen »Matto regiert« gehört, gelang Friedrich Glauser der Durchbruch als Schriftsteller. »Matto regiert« wurde 1947 verfilmt.
