Von Golden Town hatte ich schon gehört. Und eines Tages ritt ich hin. Ich war in den Bergen beim Goldsuchen ein hungriger Wolf geworden - hungrig auch nach menschlichen Sünden.
Ich hatte für etwa tausend Dollar Goldstaub bei mir. Das war ein Monatsverdienst von mehr als zweihundert Dollar - etwa zehnfacher Cowboylohn. Damit konnte ein Bursche wie ich zufrieden sein.
Ich nahm mir vor, in Golden Town nicht mehr als zwanzig Dollar auf den Tisch zu hauen. Übrigens - mein Name ist Ben Yates, und ich schreibe die Geschichte so, wie sie mir gerade einfällt.
Ich ritt also aus den Bergen der Grand Mesa in Richtung Süden zum Gunnison River hinunter.
Aber noch bevor ich das Gunnison Valley erreichte, begann mein Pech ...
