Gabriele Hoffmann, promovierte Historikerin und Journalistin, war lange für den Stern, den NDR und Radio Bremen tätig und ist Autorin historischer Sachbücher, Biographien und Tatsachenromane. Ihre vielbeachtete Doppelbiographie "Constantia von Cosel und August der Starke" ist in über 25 Auflagen erschienen, mit "Das Haus an der Elbchaussee" – bei Piper – hat sie die fulminante Familiensaga einer Reederdynastie geschrieben und zugleich ein repräsentatives Zeitbild des Bürgertums im Deutschland des 19. Jahrhunderts gezeichnet. Zuletzt holte sie mit ihrer Biographie des Bankiers Max Warburg einen Mann in Erinnerung, der in der Nazizeit 75 000 Juden das Leben rettete.
