Simon Bostock (Wildheart Baby)
I loved this book, it takes the tropes of a hero's journey, or in this case, heroine, princess Anya, and puts her into a world, where it has all the usual trappings of a fantasy adventure, and subverts them slightly. The story takes the fantasy elements that Anya has read in stories and has characters explain that no, you couldn't ride on a magic carpet, you would be blown off as there is nothing to hold onto as you travel, to give the world a more grounded feel. You have grand wizards who only wear the ceremonial clothing occasionally, witches who aren't evil, they just do business with those who pay them, and the Association of Responsible Robbers, a sort of Robin Hoodesque group, amongst others. As the journey goes on, Anya start to understand the world is bigger than her adventure, and she takes on each new challenge, with a determination, to see it done. Overall, I absolutely loved this book, and would recommend it to any age.
