‘De overtocht’ is het tweede deel van de Stoomtramtrilogie van Gerda van Wageningen. Sara is verliefd op een Vlaamse soldaat en vreest voor zijn leven in de Grote Oorlog. Het is juli 1914, en de tweeëntwintigjarige Sara woont met haar zwager bij Thomas, die het café van zijn vader runt. Thomas heeft een oogje op haar, maar Sara heeft alleen aandacht voor de Belgische soldaat Jan. Ze heeft hem ontmoet op de veerboot van de Rotterdamse Tramweg Maatschappij, waar ze werkt als buffetjuffrouw. Ze spreken af brieven uit te wisselen. Doordat Jan aan het front vecht, blijft bij Sara altijd de angst dat er iets met hem zal gebeuren.
