GERRIT LUBBE VAN ZYL - (GERRIE RADLOF)
Gerrit Lubbe van Zyl, wat veral onder die skrywersnaam Gerrie Radlof skryf, is op 27 November 1923 op Clanwilliam gebore. Hy voltooi sy hoërskoolloopbaan aan die Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck in Kaapstad. Hy skryf verskeie gewilde Afrikaanse aksieverhaal reekse, vir beide volwassenes en die jeug. Van sy reekse sluit in die Buiter reeks, Oloff die Seerower reeks en die Ramala reeks. Hy lewer ook bydraes tot die die S.A. Polisie reeks en die Swerwerspeurder reeks. Onder die skuilnaam Dirk Lubbe skryf hy die Profeet spioenasie reeks. Radlof is ook die skepper van die gewilde held van die fotoboeke, Mark Condor en die Saboteur fotoverhaal reeks.
Na skool in die Kaap werk hy by die Homes Trust versekeringsmaatskappy as aktuariële klerk en loop buitemuurse klasse aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad. Hy bedank dan om vir twee jaar as tabakboer in Rhodesië te gaan werk. Die boerdery is nie suksesvol nie en hy keer terug na die Kaap en werk weer by Homes Trust, terwyl hy deeltyds begin om avontuurverhale te skryf, om meer geld te verdien. Hy begin later voltyds skryf en werk onder andere as vryskutskrywer by Blaar Coetzee se Goeie Hoop Uitgewery. Vanaf 1956 woon hy in Hantam, die huis in Byronstraat in Tamboerskloof wat deur Boerneef gebou is en lank deur hom bewoon is.
In 1956 ontmoet hy vir Leon Rousseau, wat namens Tafelberg-Uitgewers sy boeke redigeer. Saam begin hulle ’n onderneming deur ’n bankrot persagentskap, Afritopics, te koop. Hulle verander die naam en vestig sodoende die vertaalburo en reklame-agentskap, Uniale Persdiens, waar sy vernaamste bydrae die skryf van boeke is. Na ’n ruk koop Leon hom uit en op sy eie konsentreer hy steeds op sy skryfwerk. Dan verhuis hy na Durban waar hy by Hint Hyman en Boet Hyman se uitgewery as vryskut-scenarioskrywer werk en sy eerste treë in die fotoverhaalgenre gee. Hy keer later weer terug na Kaapstad. Op Maandag 20 September 1971 is hy in ’n motorongeluk naby sy huis by Melkbosstrand in die Kaap oorlede, toe hy laat in die aand in ’n boom vasry. As een van SA se top skrywers is Gerrie Radlof se boeke vandag nog in groot aanvraag.
