Kaiser JosephII. (1741–1790) gehört zu den prominentesten Vertretern des aufgeklärten Absolutismus. Unter dem Pseudonym eines Grafen von Falkenstein hat er inkognito halb Europa bereist. Mit seinen am Maßstab der Vernunft orientierten Regelungen griff er bis ins Detail in den Alltag der Menschen ein. Als katholischer Herrscher verfolgte er eine Religionspolitik hin zu mehr Toleranz. Erstmals schaffte er in seinen Ländern die Todesstrafe ab. Sein ehrgeiziges Reformprogramm gab einer ganzen Epoche den Namen: Josephinismus.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Helmut Reinalter lehrte von 1981 bis 2009 Neuere Geschichte und Politische Philosophie an der Universität Innsbruck. Heute leitet er das Institut für Ideengeschichte und ist Dekan der Philosophischen Klasse der Europäischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste.
