Chicago in the 1930s. The clouds don't have any silver lining—and if they did, some mug would have stolen the silver.
This is Mick Oberon's city. And when you're runaway non-human royalty with a shady past, it's just as vicious, violent, and lowdown as life back home in the fae realm of Elphame. Unfortunately, Chicago's about to become the front runner in that bloody contest.
Because everything seems to be going sideways, down the drain, and straight to hell all at once. People are dying with very particular puncture marks on their necks and missing several pints of the red stuff—gee, whatever could that mean? Not to mention that Mick's nemesis—the vengeful, maniacal "good" witch Orsola—might not be as dead as he'd hoped. Then Mick's not-quite-nemesis, the beautiful, backstabbing succubus Ramona Webb, paints her way back into his picture for reasons unknown.
And that's when a vampire shows up in Mick's office asking for his help in stopping an impending nightmarish bloodbath.
