Vladimir Putin was born in Leningrad in 1952 and grew up in a communal apartment shared by several families. He began his career with the KGB, the Soviet Union's security agency, where he worked as a foreign intelligence officer for 16 years. While Putin is widely popular in Russia, his leadership has also been criticized internationally for his authoritarian tendencies and human rights abuses. Despite this, he remains a powerful figure both within Russia and on the global stage.
