Vladimir Putin was born in Leningrad in 1952 and grew up in a communal apartment shared by several families. He began his career with the KGB, the Soviet Union's security agency, where he worked as a foreign intelligence officer for 16 years. Despite this, he remains a powerful figure both within Russia and on the global stage.
