Der Begründer der Psychoanalyse, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), und der Begründer der Pastoralpsychologie, Oskar Pfister (1873-1956), standen während mehr als dreissig Jahren in regem Briefkontakt. Diese ungewöhnliche Freundschaft zwischen dem reformierten Pfarrer in Zürich und dem jüdischen Nervenarzt in Wien wird dank zahlreicher, bisher unbekannter und hier erstmals edierter und kommentierter Briefe auf breiter Quellenbasis zur Darstellung gebracht. Dies ermöglicht auch neue Einblicke in die Geschichte der Psychoanalyse. Dem besseren Verständnis dienen eine Einleitung und ein umfassender Beitrag zum Werk Pfisters - zu seiner 'Analytischen Seelsorge', aber auch zu seiner Religionspsychologie und Kulturtheorie.
