Ma nella storia di Mario Samigli, scrittore mancato e uomo mite, che trova proprio nella burla di cui è vittima occasione di riscatto e di inaspettata rivincita, vi è qualcosa di più di un indiretto richiamo alla scarsa fortuna incontrata inizialmente dallo stesso Svevo: nella pacata serenità di cui il racconto è pervaso si avverte appieno lo Svevo della maturità, e si respira una disincantata e pur dolente partecipazione che fa pensare alla poetica di Saba.
